Toyota is preparing one of its most ambitious performance cars in its modern history. The upcoming Toyota GR GT is expected to arrive around 2027 as the new flagship sports car of Toyota Gazoo Racing, combining a newly developed 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with hybrid assistance, rear-wheel drive and technology developed alongside a GT3 racing machine.
The GR GT represents a significant departure from the smaller GR86 and GR Corolla. Instead of being positioned as an accessible sports car, the GR GT is being developed as a genuine halo model — essentially a road-legal race car designed to bring Toyota Gazoo Racing's motorsport philosophy to public roads.
Toyota has already revealed development prototypes of both the GR GT and the closely related GR GT3. Although the production specifications can still change, Toyota says development is continuing with a target of launching the cars around 2027.
A New Flagship for Toyota Gazoo Racing
The GR GT is being developed around three fundamental objectives: a low centre of gravity, low weight combined with high rigidity, and optimized aerodynamic performance. These principles are immediately apparent in the car's proportions.
The prototype measures approximately 4,820 mm long, 2,000 mm wide and only 1,195 mm high, with a 2,725 mm wheelbase. Toyota is targeting a vehicle weight of 1,750 kg or less, despite the sophisticated hybrid powertrain and extensive performance equipment.
The two-seat configuration reinforces the car's focus. This is not intended to be a practical grand tourer with rear seats or a large luggage compartment. Instead, Toyota is creating a machine where the driver and passenger sit at the centre of the experience.
The company has also developed the GR GT alongside the GT3 racing version. That relationship is particularly important because the road car is not simply borrowing a sporty name from Toyota's racing division. The entire project is being shaped by motorsport engineering.
The 4.0-Liter Twin-Turbo V8
Perhaps the biggest story surrounding the GR GT is what sits underneath its long hood.
Toyota has developed a completely new 3,998 cc V8 engine featuring twin turbochargers. The engine uses an 87.5 mm bore and an 83.1 mm stroke, with the relatively short stroke helping engineers reduce the engine's overall height.
This is also a significant engine for Toyota because the company describes it as its first 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine intended for a production vehicle.
The engine uses a "hot V" configuration, placing one turbocharger between the cylinder banks. This arrangement allows the turbochargers and associated exhaust components to be packaged more compactly while helping engineers achieve the low engine placement required by the GR GT's chassis philosophy.
Toyota has also equipped the engine with dry-sump lubrication. This is a technology particularly valuable in a high-performance car because it helps maintain consistent oil supply during hard cornering and high-g manoeuvres. The oil pan itself has also been designed to be thinner than usual, contributing to the engine's compact packaging.
The result is an engine designed not merely to produce impressive numbers, but to fit into a sports car whose entire architecture revolves around keeping the centre of gravity low.
Hybrid Assistance Without Losing the V8 Character
The GR GT is not a conventional V8 supercar. Toyota is combining the twin-turbo V8 with a single electric motor integrated into the rear transaxle.
Toyota's current development target calls for 650 PS or more and maximum system torque of 850 Nm or more. The company stresses that these are development targets rather than final production figures, meaning the eventual numbers could change.
The hybrid system is also being used for a very specific purpose: improving the responsiveness of the car.
The electric motor-generator is positioned within the transaxle and can help compensate for temporary gaps in torque delivery during acceleration and gear changes. Rather than using electrification simply to maximize fuel economy, Toyota is using it as a performance tool.
This approach makes the GR GT particularly interesting. The car retains the mechanical character of a twin-turbo V8 while using electric assistance to make the power delivery more immediate and controllable.
An Eight-Speed Rear Transaxle
Power from the V8 is sent toward the rear of the vehicle through a carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic torque tube. At the back, Toyota has developed a new eight-speed automatic transmission integrated into the transaxle.
Instead of a conventional torque converter, the transmission uses a wet-start clutch. A mechanical limited-slip differential is also incorporated into the rear transaxle.
The combination gives the GR GT a traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout while allowing Toyota to place substantial mass toward the rear of the vehicle.
Toyota's development figures indicate a 45:55 front-to-rear weight distribution, favouring the rear axle. That should help the car achieve a more balanced handling character, particularly when accelerating out of corners.
Built Around an Aluminum Structure
Keeping a 4.0-liter V8, hybrid hardware and high-performance equipment within a relatively light sports car is a considerable engineering challenge.
Toyota's solution includes an all-aluminum body frame — the company's first such production-oriented body structure — combined with aluminum body panels and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic components.
The objective is straightforward: reduce weight without sacrificing rigidity.
A rigid structure is especially important for a car designed to operate both on public roads and on a race track. The suspension can work more accurately when the underlying structure remains stable, while steering response and driver feedback can also benefit from greater chassis rigidity.
Toyota says the GR GT has been developed with an emphasis on the relationship between driver and machine. The company has repeatedly tested, refined and repaired development vehicles as part of its philosophy of making "ever-better cars."
Serious Aerodynamic Performance
The GR GT's proportions reveal that aerodynamics are another major part of the project.
The car is extremely low and wide, with a long front section, aggressive bodywork and a substantial rear aerodynamic package. The goal is not simply to make the vehicle look dramatic. Toyota is explicitly targeting aerodynamic performance as one of the three central principles behind the GR GT.
The wide rear tires are particularly striking. Toyota lists 265/35ZR20 tires at the front and enormous 325/30ZR20 tires at the rear. These tires, combined with the rear-wheel-drive layout and limited-slip differential, should give the car substantial mechanical grip.
Carbon-ceramic brakes are also specified for both axles, underlining the GR GT's track-oriented intentions.
Performance Above 300 km/h
Toyota's current development target calls for a top speed of at least 320 km/h, or approximately 199 mph.
That figure places the GR GT firmly in supercar territory.
The final acceleration figures have not been officially confirmed, and Toyota has not released a definitive production specification. However, with at least 650 PS of hybrid system output, 850 Nm or more of torque, rear-wheel drive and a target weight below 1,750 kg, the GR GT is clearly being engineered for serious straight-line and cornering performance.
The important point is that Toyota is not presenting the GR GT as merely a powerful luxury coupe. Its development philosophy is much closer to that of a competition machine adapted for road use.
Designed for the Road and the Track
Despite its aggressive performance targets, Toyota says the GR GT has been tested on public roads as well as in performance environments.
This dual-purpose philosophy is reflected in the interior. The driving position, visibility and controls have been designed around both professional drivers and enthusiasts who may use the car regularly on the road. Toyota has also paid particular attention to the placement of driving-related switches and the visibility of the instrument displays.
That matters because a car capable of more than 320 km/h does not necessarily need to be uncomfortable or difficult to drive.
Toyota appears to want the GR GT to combine extreme performance with enough usability to make the car enjoyable outside the circuit.
The Sound of a New Toyota V8
Another interesting aspect of the GR GT project is the attention Toyota has given to engine sound.
The company says engineers worked specifically on creating an audible connection between the driver and the vehicle. The exhaust system was designed to produce a sound that corresponds with the vehicle's operating state, including acceleration and deceleration.
That may sound like a minor detail, but it is significant at a time when many high-performance manufacturers are moving toward smaller engines, electrification and increasingly synthetic sound experiences.
Toyota's decision to develop a new twin-turbo V8 for a production performance car is already unusual. The company's focus on preserving the character and sound of that engine makes the GR GT even more interesting to traditional performance-car enthusiasts.
The Connection to the GR GT3
The GR GT is being developed together with the GR GT3, a dedicated FIA GT3-specification race car.
The two vehicles share important structural and mechanical concepts, including the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. The GR GT3 is intended for customers who want to compete in professional motorsport, while the GR GT brings much of the same engineering philosophy to a road-legal vehicle.
This connection gives the GR GT a different identity from many modern supercars.
Toyota is not simply creating a powerful road car and then developing a racing version afterward. The road and racing projects are being developed together, allowing motorsport requirements to influence the architecture of the road-going model.
A New Era for Toyota Performance
The GR GT could become one of the most important Toyota performance cars in decades.
Toyota has a long history of producing enthusiast-focused machines, from the legendary Supra and MR2 to more recent GR models. However, the GR GT occupies a completely different level of the market.
With its new V8, hybrid system, rear transaxle, aluminum structure, carbon-fibre components, carbon-ceramic brakes and race-derived development, the GR GT is being positioned as the technological flagship of Gazoo Racing.
Its importance also extends beyond the numbers. Toyota is demonstrating that electrification does not necessarily mean abandoning large-capacity performance engines. Instead, the company is using electric power to complement the V8 and improve response.
Production is currently targeted for around 2027, although Toyota has emphasized that the GR GT remains under development and that specifications can change before the production version is finalized.
If Toyota delivers the car according to the targets it has announced, the GR GT could become a very unusual machine: a modern hybrid supercar with the heart of a traditional V8, the architecture of a racing car and the engineering resources of one of the world's largest automobile manufacturers.
For enthusiasts who feared that the era of dramatic internal-combustion performance cars was coming to an end, the GR GT represents a surprisingly exciting counterexample.
